Perry is the daughter of actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played the role. Perry did not decide to explore acting as a profession until she reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being afraid of the negative effects that stress could have. Perry claimed that she was nervous to be an actor during high school, but started doing shows in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring from Boston University. Perry started her acting career as an actress in New York after graduation, performing in minor roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry return to California and pursue a career as an actress in the theater. She performed on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie alongside her in the year 2015. Perry starred in nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, Perry had an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal alongside her father. She was also cast in her role on the CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger of Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The actress was chosen for the role despite her close familial connection to the character.
